Job Description
To build prognostic regional climate model simulations for the Interior Western USA and assist in model output visualization in support of a 5-year NSF-funded project. This position may be filled for up to 5 years, subject to annual performance evaluations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The post-doc will be responsible for the collection of CMIP-6 climate model guidance for the Interior Western US, especially Wyoming, for the development and validation of dynamically downscaled retrospective simulations, and for high-resolution future climate simulations. Climate simulations may be coupled with dynamic vegetation models and stream flow models, in collaboration with scientists at the National Center of Atmospheric Research. High-resolution regional paleo-climate simulations guided by PMIP will be conducted as well.
REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY:
For matching qualifications, preference will be given to candidates planning to relocate to Laramie, to work in-person at the University of Wyoming. However this position is eligible for remote work. In case of remote work, visits to Laramie are required twice a year at the expense of the candidate. Candidates must be eligible to work in the Unites States.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ph.D. degree in earth system science, climate science, atmospheric science, or closely related field. At least three years of relevant work experience beyond an M.S degree may substitute for a Ph.D.;
- Demonstrated experience working with weather, climate, or earth system models;
- Demonstrated proficiency in advanced scientific programming;
- Experience with the visualization of climate model output.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with supercomputers and large data streams.
- Knowledge and experience with hydrological models and/or dynamic vegetation models and/or paleoclimate simulations;
- Ability to work with faculty and a data management team on the simulation designs and on climate model output mining tools;
- Ability to work independently, with frequent meetings with a lead faculty and an advisory working group;
- A willingness to rapidly learn, to be outcome-oriented, and to build a foundation for a successful career;
- Strong oral and written communication skills;
- Strong publication record.
